Kyle R. Boynton

The firm’s Principal, Kyle Boynton, is a former federal civil rights prosecutor and FBI Special Agent who safeguards his clients’ rights and interests in high-stakes federal investigations and prosecutions. As a defense attorney, Kyle is fiercely dedicated to every client, with a focus on clear and consistent client communication, thorough independent review of the government’s case, honest assessments to aid clients in making informed decisions, and a fearless resolve to fight for acquittals at trial if necessary. He is a member of the Criminal Justice Act Panel for the Eastern District of Virginia.

Education

Kyle holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia, where he double-majored in English literature and psychology. He graduated cum laude from Georgetown University Law Center, where he served as an Executive Editor of the American Criminal Law Review, the nation’s premier criminal law journal.

Prior Experience

During his prior service with the Civil Rights Division of the Justice Department, Kyle led numerous high-profile investigations and prosecutions involving police misconduct and hate crimes. He successfully prosecuted law enforcement officers and other government officials for excessive force, sexual abuse, and obstructing justice; hate-motivated gunmen and arsonists for murders, attempted murders, and attacks on houses of worship; as well as conspiracy against rights and FACE Act defendants for the blockading of health clinics. He has tried over a dozen cases to verdict.

Kyle began his legal career as a law clerk for a U.S. District Judge in the Alexandria Division of the Eastern District of Virginia. Prior to law school, he served as a Special Agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, where he investigated transnational organized crime rings, narcotics, public corruption, and money laundering.

Awards and Recognition

Kyle was twice recognized with the Civil Rights Division’s Distinguished Service Award, and received the Attorney General’s Distinguished Service Award, the Justice Department’s second-highest award, for the prosecution of the gunman who carried out the 2019 terror attack on the Cielo Vista Walmart in El Paso, Texas, that killed 23 people and wounded 22 others. His legal analyses have been featured in articles by The Washington Post, The Atlantic, CBS News, and Bloomberg.
